Family Dentistry – Addison TX – Dentist Michele Williams The Addison Dentist – Texas 75001

If visiting the dentist makes you nervous, you are not alone. Anxiety keeps many people from going to the dentist and getting the care they need.

Sedation dentistry is a safe way to manage anxiety, nervousness, and increase comfort so you can relax during any dental procedure.

You can relax during your visit even if you experience one or more of the following:

  • High fear of dental care
  • Procedures requiring longer appointments
  • More complicated dental procedures
  • Uncomfortable dental experiences in the past
  • Fear of needles and shots
  • Trouble getting numb
  • Sensitive teeth

The three most common types of sedation dentistry are:

  1. Nitrous Oxide
  2. Oral Conscious Sedation
  3. IV Sedation

Nitrous Oxygen

When Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) is inhaled, it helps your body relax while you remain totally conscious. This is the most popular form of sedation that can be used during almost any procedure.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Through this type of sedation you will experience very deep relaxation while still being conscious. The doctor will provide you with a prescription for an oral medication that is easy to swallow, safe, and low cost. Most adults will receive Halcion (triazolam) that is taken before you arrive at the office for your scheduled dental procedure. When the medication takes effect, you will be able to speak and respond to requests while being very relaxed. Many patients request oral conscious sedation for lengthier procedures. Oral conscious sedation patients make arrangements for a friend or family member to drive them to and from their appointment.

IV Sedation

Some patients prefer sedation to be administered intravenously for more extensive procedures. IV sedation has the advantage of including various agents to reduce pain, reduce inflammation and manage consciousness and more during dental procedure.

We can help you choose the method of sedation that is just right for you. The best part is, there is no reason to dread going to the dentist anymore. Sedation dentistry offers so many alternatives, most of our patients say that they actually enjoy coming for their dental visit!
